Session 36 (January 18, 2024)
Last session, our heroes sat in the hold of the Midlane as Elias, cornered by the party, set about explaining some aspects of his past and identity. He said that he was involved in a rebellion against Lord Emperor Kogar Mistwall in his homeland the Nor’Southern Isles. Ash, the person who etched the note in his pocket watch, was feeding information to the rebellion through Elias. Imperial soldiers found the resistance headquarters, however, and decimated them. Elias discovered Ash’s real name was Petunia Ashlyn Mistwall. She was the daughter of Kogar, and information Elias had shared with her was instrumental in the devastating attack on the resistance. Elias fled the Nor’Southern Isles for Perrinor. While traveling with the party, he also learned that Lucien Dynastic has some connection to the Nor’Southern Isles.
Oh also Elias revealed he has no brothers.
The party then spent the last few hours before their arrival at Eken. Heph constructed Alchemist’s Supplies, Maho played with a stack of apples, and Elias chatted with Peg Leg Stephanie about hunting people for sport. Ana expertly disguised Maho as a pegasus, allowing her to disembark outside the confines of a wooden crate. She discussed her father in Eken, and asked Heph for advice. The Midlane then arrived at the base of the tischberg on which Eken sits. The Belay Rail, a series of ropes and cables and pulleys maneuvering cars and platforms up the massive cliff face, covered a mile horizontally and hundreds of feet vertically. The party selected a fancy looking car made of smooth metal and glass, administered by a be-wigged man with a clipboard. After some shenanigans, Elias convinced him he was Duke Pippinpadolopsocopolias the IVth, and that Duke Pippinpadolopsocopolias the IVth had access to the car, and they were let in.
The party took the around 45 minute ride to the top of the cliff, accompanied by just one stranger, a wealthy woman of the Coterie “Hess”, who was told they were going to Fantasy Furry Con. They exited the car and got their first full glimpse of the massive city of Eken, its dense, square buildings covered in gardens and greenery and stretching far into the distance. Maho posed their first stop as Tap That Glass, a blacksmith/blown glass shop in the neighborhood of Tuki.
- As the group heads to the blacksmith, Elias asks Maho
about the fancy families
- She says her boss knows more about them, she usually interacts with the lackeys
- Elias asks about the Ehrhalts, she doesn’t know much but they’ve been around for a while
- She doesn’t know if there’s any dragonborn blood in the family
- Heph remembers Frederick who is a member of the Ehrhalts
- Maho notes there are more guards than usual, but Tuki is also pretty high-end
- Elias and Heph try to be high-end: Elias flips his cloak around to be diamond studded, and Heph polishes up his armor
- There is an element of extravagance and people are flashier as we head into Tuki
- Think well-to-do hipster vibe
- Heph asks Maho about a good place to find a cloak or something to cover up his full suit of armor, and she mentions there is a market in the Northern part of the city
- The group rounds a corner and approaches the blacksmith’s shop
- There are glass wares on display in the windows
- Maho leads the way into the shop, a bell rings as we walk in and hear an “I’ll be right with you” from beneath a trapdoor
- Maho says it’s her and the shopkeeper, Barth, is excited to see her
- Maho asks if TK has been there, he looks around, and seeing no one else around he explains that TK himself hasn’t been around but a representative was
- The representative was by earlier that day
- He asks Maho if she’s in trouble, and she says she might be
- He asks if he can help, and she asks for a new mask
- <SOME DIALOGUE ABOUT THE PEGASUS COSTUME>
- Maho wants to change up the mask, and doesn’t want TK to know she’s around
- Maho introduces Elias and Heph as Old Man and Pancake, and they claim those are their real names
- He leads the entire group down to his workshop to look at masks
- On the way he explains the 3 most powerful magics are love, chronomancy, and runes
- The workshop has very low ceilings and is poorly ventilated, Elias hits his head and Maho knocks over a vase on a shelf
- Elias uses Mage Hand to catch it, it looks like a white gloved hand, vaguely like Mickey Mouse’s hand
- Elias puts it back on the shelf, but then bumps it again and it shatters
- Heading deeper into the shop, Barth opens a drawer of masks and shows them to Maho
- There is one mask that looks vaguely dragon-like, although that seems not
like what he was going for
- It has a bit of a snout
- Maho asks him to carve “the usual” into it, and he says he thinks he has optimized the design
- Maho also asks for another one, because she thinks her dad might need one as well
- Barth asks if he can help, but Maho wants to keep him and her dad out of things as much as possible
- The sending stone from TK rings, and Heph digs it
out of his bag of holding
- The voice that comes through says “You’ve been fairly busy. I’ve heard from my contacts what you’ve been up to. You should pay me a visit.”
- Maho drops the stone out of shock, but Elias catches it in his Mage Hand
- Elias reels it back in dramatically and hands it to Heph
- Maho doesn’t want to reply, and Heph puts it back into his pouch
- Maho has a realization that her dad might be in danger, and starts heading out of the shop
- Elias and Heph quickly ask about other masks, but he
doesn’t know anything about the porcelain masks
- Not his preferred material of construction
- Elias and Heph follow Maho out of the shop and rush towards Maho’s house
- The street becomes more residential as we head North, although the houses are
still very big and nice
- We approach Maho’s house, it is large but not overly ornate, it’s two stories but it’s tall enough for three, there are a number of stone statues of animals and exotic creatures in the yard, made of stone and clay
- The house doesn’t seem to be damaged at all, the door is shut and nothing seems amiss
- Heph sends Karrl out to circle the house as we approach, and when the group stops Heph jumps into Karrl’s senses
- Maho doesn’t wait and heads to the house
- As Karrl circles the house, Heph sees a number of individuals on the second story in a messy bedroom with a large 4-poster bed
- A human man, who looks fairly worried, is sitting on the bed, and one other elf guy is sitting on a chair
- There are two additional figures, one human woman on the second floor, in Maho’s room looking out the front windows, and a dwarf woman watching the front door of the house
- Maho, arriving at the front door, finds that it is locked, and while fumbling for the key Elias relays the information that Heph has messaged him
- The woman looking out the window on the second floor sees Maho and Elias approach, and stomps on the floor to alert the downstairs woman of their presence
- The person sitting on the bed looks up curiously, and the one sitting in the chair looks more alert
- Maho slips around the side of the building to where she knows her room is, and there is a set of cracks that she uses to climb directly in and out of her room
- Elias starts climbing up the wall, and Maho uses Giant’s Might to double her size
- As Elias reaches the windowsill, giant Maho jumps up and grabs the lip of the roof
- The woman looking out the window’s eyes go wide as a giant pegasus flies past the window
- Maho swings through the window, breaking into the house and pinning the woman to the floor, who doesn’t look particularly familiar to Maho
- The dwarf downstairs starts running upstairs, and the guy in the chair in the bedroom looks at the man on the bed slightly worried and concerned, and hesitates before leaving the room to stand in the hallway to get a better eyeline to what is happening
- The person sitting on the bed looks confused and surprised
- Seeing the woman vacate the entryway, Heph runs up to the door and picks the lock to head inside
- Elias follow Maho inside, pulls out his rapier and prepares an attack for whoever runs through the door
- The person Maho pinned is looking at her, and seems to recognize Maho and asks what she’s doing
- Maho is in a slight rage, and demands that the pinned woman shut up
- The dwarf and elf see Heph enter, and they all just sort of stare at each other
- Maho yells out “dad?” and he responds to her and sounds confused
- Maho heads towards the door, dragging the woman with her
- Maho squeezes herself through the door, and sees the dwarf and elf, and they grip their weapons, and the dwarf draws her ax and enters a defensive combat stance
- The dwarf says they don’t want to harm Maho, and orders her to put Lana down
- Maho demands she leave, and the dwarf explains they are there for protection
- Maho shrinks back down to normal size but is able to maintain the grapple, calms down slightly, and demands that these people explain themselves
- The dwarf says they were ordered (by you know who) to come there to wait for Maho and protect her father, but they will defend themselves if the need arises
- Maho tells the people that she doesn’t want their help, and they should go back to TK
- The dwarf says they have their orders, and they need to follow them
- She asks again for Maho to release Lana, and Maho pushes her over towards the dwarf
- The dwarf rushes to her and helps her up a bit, and the dwarf puts her ax back in her belt, and nods at the elf, who relaxes his grip on his rapier
- Maho’s dad again calls out from the bedroom, “Maho?”
- Maho says “dad?” and pushes past the people to get to her dad
- Elias was hiding behind a door and had his crossbow out, but he pokes his head out, asks if we’re good, and the dwarf says we’re good for now
- Elias puts his heavy crossbow away and the dwarf seems skeptical that he knows how to use it
- Heph locks the front door, and heads upstairs to join Elias and Maho
- As soon as the man on the bed sees Maho, he looks relieved and runs up to her to hug her
- He explains that they showed up to keep an eye out, because guards might be looking for him, he seems surprised that Maho is back so soon
- The elf explains that they were also ordered to be on the lookout because members of Central Command might be looking for him
- Maho explains Mandel went missing, and Maho says that the general he met at Wildeport turned on them
- Heph suggests that we need to confront TK and figure out what he knows
- Maho suggests that her dad go to Barth’s so that he is somewhere she knows to be safe
- Maho opens the door to the bedroom and leads the party out of the
room
- Maho says to the elf “we’re going out”
- He says their orders were to keep and eye on Maho’s dad, and Heph asks for clarification on the exact orders
- He calls for the dwarf (“Gerde!”), and after some convincing, Heph and Elias manage to talk them into moving locations to the blacksmith
- The dwarf asks again if we were followed, and through Karrl Heph notices that there are more people around and some loitering folks who are looking at the house far too often for what would be normal
- Maho says we can go through the backyard to get to the next street, which appears to be clear
- Maho’s dad leads us to the kitchen, where he keeps his clothes, and pulls out a super warm cloak that he got for research in the mountains
- We head out the backdoor, trying to stealthily make our way to Tap That
Glass
- While trying to dodge the suspicious individuals, we are routed through a strange path that we didn’t take previously
- After rounding a corner, we find ourselves in an area that is completely empty, with no crowds
- As we enter this area, a bunch of dudes in gray robes step out and separate Elias from the rest of the party
