Session 47: The one where the group becomes jesters (May 9, 2024)
Last session, our heroes set about interrogating a now much more compliant Isabella Isabelli. Elias sent Heph and Maho out of the room while he chatted with her about what she had been up to while following them since Kolonie. She revealed it was the NDA Heph had signed back in Ivalgo that she used to track him and cast Geas. The NDA Rormir had signed had similarly been used on him, although apparently to much greater effect. Isabella said that she had hoped to bring the party to Bad Zamdorf, where Sentin Thornwillow could decide what best to do with them. Business was apparently going well, with thousands of Lucien Blinds in production.
Meanwhile, Maho was outside tending to the horse, who she was rattling off potential names to. It watched her intently as she spoke, responding differently to different names and occasionally interspersing her speech with short structured gallops and prances. It responded most positively to the name Woahdoe Boedough.
Elias convinced Isabella to drop Geas on Heph, and they then left Maho alone with her while they discussed what to do next. She explained to Maho all the great benefits of kidnapping goliaths for use as agents. Angry, Maho offered Isabella a rough massage, eventually ending in her breaking her arm as the others walked in. Maho then beheaded Isabella, feeling the warmth of her katana briefly turn icy cold.
The party threw Isabella’s body in the hearse, dumped her off the side of the Tischberg (as a goat for the first 30 feet), and headed to Tap That Glass for some final supplies before leaving town. Heph got a pair of lenses free of charge, while Elias wandered the area looking for a bow. Maho asked Barth for a new sheath for her katana, and upon taking out her sword heard a voice ask where it was. Maho and Heph discussed this while they waited for Barth to complete his work.
- Looking for a place to buy a bow, Elias finds Thong
Paradise
- Elias, after seeing the name, is disappointed to find that the store only sells bows
- The dwarf manning the store asks what he wants, and Elias explains he is looking for a longbow
- The dwarf presents two options, Wind Singer, a
+1
bow he made himself, and an imported Battlement bow- Wind Singer is covered in overly ornate carvings of scrollwork, leaves, and acorns, and the proprietor claims he made it using techniques he learned while on vacation in Duin
- Elias pulls out his heavy crossbow, and asks if the shopkeeper does trade ins; the shopkeeper offers him 40gp for the crossbow parts
- Elias asks about some of the special arrows he has in the shop, and he shows him Safety Arrows™
- Elias asks about stabbing with the arrows for the healing properties, and on a nat 1 the guy gets rather suspicious of Elias and asks him to leave the building, heading to the door to call for someone
- There are also more special arrows: Juicy Shafts, which cast Zone of Truth,
Cupid’s Little Pricks, which causes the target to be attracted to the
shooter, and then there are Baby’s First Projectile™, which deal
-1
damage but have a random effect on hit - Elias Mage Hands Wind Singer to himself, grabs 6 Safety Arrows™, 2 Juicy Shafts, 5 Cupid’s Little Pricks, and 4 Baby’s First Projectiles™
- The dwarf turns to Elias, tells him if he pays another 150gp he won’t call the guard, Elias pays for the original purchase and misty steps to the roof
- Elias hastily calculates the amount he needs to pay and ends up calculating it to 1020gp, although it was really 820gp with the 40gp refund from the crossbow
- Back at Tap That Glass, Barth has
finished Maho’s katana sheath
- It’s very industrial looking, but it’s got some dwarvish engravings and a bit of paint to decorate it
- Maho explains to Barth that she may be getting more use out of the Katana, since we are venturing into a den of evil
- Barth tells Maho she and her dad are always welcome, and asks what he should do if TK’s people come by
- Maho says Barth should avoid them to be safe, but he probably has nothing to worry about
- Elias walks in, muttering to himself and counting on his fingers, Heph notes it but Elias claims to have just found it
- The group leaves the shop and discusses the plan to get to Bad
Zamdorf
- Heph suggests they could “hoof” it, and Elias falls to the ground laughing
- Elias says “let’s go Mystery!” and the horse seems nonplussed
- Elias climbs onto the back of the horse, Heph climbs into the back, and Maho climbs into the driver’s seat
- Elias climbs off the horse, climbs over Maho, pokes a hole in the cart between the driver’s seat and the back, then climbs back up onto the horse
- He ends up backwards on the horse, kicks it and says “onward Mystery!”
- Woahdoe Boedough starts slowly walking in roughly the right direction, but with no urgency
- Elias says “I am speed!”
- While moving North through the city, Karrl comes back and lands on
Heph’s shoulder in the back of the hearse
- Heph gets images of the commander going to a Central Command station, had a brief conversation, and made a call with a Sending Stone
- Eventually a number of soldiers exited the station and headed Northwest, Edward remaining in the station for a bit before heading in that direction himself
- Edward heads to TK’s manor, where several Central Command guards are posted, and Edward and 3 other officials head into the manor
- Some time later, they exit, and make their way back the direction they came from, but the perimeter guards stay behind
- Some people who were heading to visit the manor see the guard presence and decide it is better to skip their visit for that day
- Heph realizes they almost forgot about the goliaths, and mentions
it to Maho and Elias
- Elias jumps over to the roof of the wagon, and looks around for pigeons
- Salty is sitting on the horse’s back, where Elias just was a few moments before
- Elias asks where Ana is, and the horse takes off its head and reveals that Ana was really there and Woahdoe Boedough was off to the side
- Elias Mage Hands Woahdoe Boedough’s reigns and leads him back to the group
- Ana reveals that the goliaths are hidden, and offers to lead us there
- Elias asks if she is driving the cart, she winks, and then suddenly is no longer attached to the cart
- Maho drives Woahdoe to follow Ana as she leads us to the basement
- Ana leads us to a stone building that is under construction in
Altstadt, and shows us a back door she broke into earlier
- Heading down into an abandoned wine cellar, we see the goliaths hanging out, trying to keep themselves amused
- Suzuki sees Maho and says “Maho, you’re back”
- Suzuki explains that they’ve been getting to know each other a bit, since this is the first time they’ve been together that any of them remember
- Maho tells them about the masks, Heph pulling one out to show them, and they recoil a bit
- The goliaths all remember up to the moment the mask was put on, which are the moments we saw in the flashbacks
- They have some vague memories of their time with the masks, but the memories are dream-like and fading with time
- Suzuki remembers feeling hungry and tired, but it was like he was observing rather than directly feeling them
- There was no one directly ordering them, but they all felt a deep-seated desire to accomplish some task
- Suzuki starts to explain that he remembers Izume seeing humans around, but then stops himself and tells Maho he’s not sure how much he should reveal
- Maho says Heph and Elias are okay, and reveals she is half goliath
- Elias was drinking some dusty wine, and does a spit-take at that revelation, then re-corks the wine and puts it in his bag
- Maho continues to explain that the goliaths are a scattered people, and Sentin and his people are taking advantage of that fact for recruitment
- Heph asks Suzuki what date he was taken, only Maho understands what he is communicating, but it is about a month ago
- Izume had seen the humans and he followed her out to investigate, but he doesn’t know what happened to her
- Tomatsu thinks Elias and Heph are humans, Heph explains that they are a gnome and an elf, and Tomatsu thinks Heph is a child
- Elias reinforces this and pats Heph on the head, and Heph gets a bit upset
- The goliaths don’t really remember the actual trip from where they were to Eken
- Suzuki turns to Maho, and expresses how lucky they are to have run into her rather than anyone less friendly
- Ando seems to remember some of their orders, to kill Heph, Elias, and Rormir, and protect Isariel, but Maho’s name didn’t come up in the original orders
- The group invites the goliaths to come along to Bad Zamdorf and help them confront Sentin
- Suzuki seems willing to go along, if only to try to find Izume
- Suzuki asks if Sentin is a gnome, and Heph says that he has the pointy ear condition
- The goliaths think that the gnome and elf “illnesses” are contagious
- Heph calls out for Ana, and asks her to help
disguise them, and Ana reveals herself and tells
Elias to help her disguise them
- When none of them volunteer, Ana walks up to Ando, and points Elias to Suzuki
- When Ana is done, there is just a badger in Ando’s place
- Elias thinks it must be a badger of holding, and tries to climb in its mouth, but it chitters and pulls away
- Elias tries to disguise Suzuki as a gnome, and manages to make him look like a super stretched out gnome
- Elias wants to try again, but Ana says he’s tried enough
- Elias tries to gives Tomatsu the clothes from the museum, and then disguises him as a way that is hard to pin down, but is confusing and makes him not look like a goliath
- Heading outside, Woahdoe Boedough looks nervous at the load, and we go to buy another horse
- It turns out there is a service that rents horses for the trip from
Eken to Bad Zamdorf for only 50gp, with 25gp back
on delivery
- Heph, Elias and Maho split the cost 3 ways, and end up with a muscular black horse, which Elias names Mystery 2
- With some fairly bad stealth rolls, this odd looking wagon attracts quite a bit of attention
- Heading out of town, we encounter a central command checkpoint
- The guard approaches the wagon and asks where we’re going, Elias jumps in to explain that we are heading to Bad Zamdorf
- The guard asks what our business is, and Elias explains that this motley crew are performers
- Heph starts juggling some shiny rocks, which mesmerizes the guards, and then starts changing up the magical tinkering effect on them as he goes
- Elias uses Minor Illusion to add more rocks to the show
- After some explanation about how we haven’t performed in Eken due to a time crunch, Elias prompts them for money, at which point they get super serious because they are on the job
- Heph opens the back and shows them the “world’s heaviest badger”, which they are unable to pick up
- They demand that we leave, and we load back up on the wagon and Maho sends prods the horses to keep going
- About 45 minutes after leaving the city, we encounter the cliff face, and see
the anchors of all the cars that go up and down the cliff face
- Heph points Maho to get in the line for a large car that a bunch of merchant carts got out of
- The guys seems confused about the weird cart, but explaining that we are a group of performers he just sort of gives up and lets us on
- We load up onto the car, and it starts lowering down the cliff
- Looking out from the car, the land heading towards Bad Zamdorf seems surprisingly fertile for being in a desert, the proximity to the river seeming to make the area much more green than expected
- The party arrives at ground level
