Session 65: The End of an Era (October 24, 2024)

Last session, our heroes were shown a shocking item by Ser, a member of the Dalin resistance. He had an ancient stone tablet, passed down through generations of his family, depicting the Spirit of the Deep, a man with worn-off face carved alongside tentacles, a giant snake, and a set of balanced scales. Ser explained that the Spirit was a force of personhood in the depths of the Feywild. Legend says he created the elves, who migrated into shallower water, eventually forming a civilisation in the Nor’Southern Isles and maybe even traveling to other planes from there. Inspection of the tablet and discussion with Karrl seemed to confirm that this carving was, in fact, of Rormir himself.

The party then headed off to the Sanctuary, an ancient underground temple that served as a meeting place for the rebellion in Dalin. There you were met with Teleor, Thad, Gelian, and Saraen, respectively council members focusing on community relationships, education, security, and leadership. They seemed surprised Delilas had returned so soon, and were especially surprised her brother Elias was present. All of them (except Thad) expressed concern that the cause of the Scouring of Shaenor was involved in such an important mission. However, with the help of Maho, Heph, and Rormir explaining just how important this opportunity was and the danger of allowing Kogar to get access to Lucien Blinds, plus the not-insignificant effect of Elias letting Gelian shoot him with a Juicy Shaft, the party received unanimous support from the council to provide reinforcements.

Just then, they heard the sound of running echoing through the hallway. A teenage boy ran into the Sanctuary, out of breath, announcing the Order of Steel found the base and was just a few minutes away. The sound of marching footfalls and clanking of armor echoed down the hallway towards them.

• There are a few minutes until the soldiers get there, and the group starts to make a plan
  • The council says there are no other doors, but Thad lets slip there’s a basement
  • They emphasize the basement is really not a good path to take, and they don’t want to go that route
  • Maho boosts Heph up to take a look at the vents, but they’re a bit short
  • Elias pulls out his rope of climbing, and climbs up to take a look inside
  • He sees a narrow dark tunnel that is hard to see, and he smells an unidentifiable but strong smell, and he hears echoes of movement and grinding coming through the vent
  • There are doors in the hallway, 4 wooden ones and 1 stone one which leads to the basement
  • Ultimately the group hides in the first room, using Silent Image to make the doorway look like a wall, and hide in the room to scout out the enemy force that runs past
• Ana (perceived by Rormir) and Delilas get ready to jump into a fight if one starts
  • Maho activates her hill rune to give her damage resistance, and readies an attack for if someone enters her range
  • The council members, Ser and Hilariel prepare to attack
  • Rormir stays hidden and prepares his Starry Form, hears several many armored feet coming down the hall, and smells an oil
  • Gelian looks at Elias, and asks him what he can do to make up for what he cost them, and Elias replies he has a few tricks up his sleeve now, he flips his cloak to black, smears some black face paint on his face, and tells Jarles to get ready to do some murdering
  • The soldiers seem to immediately notice that the wall is fake, and Sulfurist 2 steps up to the wall
  • Rormir enters his Starry Form, and casts Moonbeam on the enemies, Sulfurist 2 failing the save, Heavy 1 and 2 succeeding
  • Delilas throws a blade and misses, and Ana throws a dagger, landing a crit on Sulfurist 2 and dealing some damage
  • Maho launches a handaxe at Sulfurist 2, dealing some damage
  • Gelian fires a shot with her bow and misses wildly
  • Hilariel also throws a dagger at Sulfurist 2, critting and dealing 8 damage
  • Elias shoots an arrow at Sulfurist 2, hitting a pouch that seems to let a smell of oil out, and taking down the enemy
  • Heph casts Shatter on the group, dealing a bunch of damage and bursting open the pouch that Elias shot, causing it to leak oil everywhere
  • Sulfurist 2 steps up to the opening, launching a wave of fire into the room, hitting Heph, Maho and Ana, and making a bonfire with the oil that spilled previously
  • Heavy 2 walks into the fire and swings twice at Maho but misses
  • Sulfurist 3, Heavy 3, and Archer 2 move forward, Sulfurist 3 and Heavy 3 taking some Moonbeam damage
  • Heph uses a Thunderwave, dealing some damage to Heavy 2 and Sulfurist 4 and full damage to Heavy 1, then moves out of the fire
• Delilas throws two psychic knives at Heavy 2, dealing some damage and taking him down
  • Ana throws a dagger at Sulfurist 4 and moves out of the fire, backflipping over Elias
  • The ceiling in the main room cracks and crumbles, and we can hear rocks falling down, seeming like there is some structural damage occurring in the main room
  • Maho steps up to the door, swinging her Katana at Sulfurist 4 but missing, turns large and stabs at him again, dealing some damage, and ends her turn in the fire
  • The council and other elves move to the back of the room to protect them
  • Rormir shoots at Sulfurist 3, missing once but hitting a second shot, and missing the starry form shot, and steps back from the fire
  • Elias launches a shot at Sulfurist 3, taking him down, flips his cloak to be fiery, then attempts to hide under a table but fails badly
  • Sai Horrel moves into the Moonbeam, walks up to Maho and bashes her with his shield, dealing some damage, then tries to smack her with his mace and misses
  • Heavy 1 swings at Maho, dealing a bit of damage, and 2 archers shoot at her, 2 shots hitting but Maho redirects to Sulfurist 4
  • Archer 3 steps back and launches 2 arrows, both missing due to Maho being in partial cover
  • Heavy 3 steps up to Maho and swings at her, landing one blow
  • Sulfurist 1 steps into the Moonbeam, takes some damage, and launches another ball of fire into the room, but Maho dodges some of the damage
  • Heph launches lightning at Heavy 1, finishing him off
• Delilas and Ana attempt to fight the fire, Delilas succeeds and manages to push the fire back a bit
  • More rocks and things seem to emerge from the ceiling in the main chamber, Maho sees that they seem to be massive thick vines
  • Maho grabs Sai Horrel, and drags him into the room, where he takes a tiny bit of damage from the fire, then uses a second wind to recover some HP, then attacks Sai with her Katana, dealing some damage
  • Maho action surges, slicing at him two more times, landing one more shot
  • Hilariel and Gelian push the fire back again
  • Rormir shifts to get a better vantage point, shoots at Sai with guiding bolt, then launches a shot with Starry Form and hits him a second time
  • Karrl attempts to fly out of the room, and Sai cuts him down as he flies by, Karrl falls and there is blood flowing where he lands, and Rormir feels the pain from him, and as Karrl falls into the Moonbeam, and his body converts back into an octopus
  • Elias draws a shadow Jarles, yells “No Karrl!”, and runs up to Sai, attacking him with Booming Blade and dealing a bunch of damage to him, and then walks away from him
  • The fire spreads, consuming Sai and dealing some damage
  • Sai looks around, a bit scared, and attacks Maho, landing one attack
  • Archer 2 steps into the Moonbeam and takes some damage, then shoots two arrows at Saraen, hitting one and dealing a small bit of damage
  • Archer 4 steps into the Moonbeam, also firing two arrows, but misses both shots
  • Archer 1 shoots two arrows at Maho, critting Maho with one arrow, which Maho reduces most of the damage for
  • Archer 3 moves up and shoots two more arrows and misses both
  • Heavy 4 moves into the Moonbeam, swings at Maho, landing one strike
  • Sulfurist 1 walks into the Moonbeam, realizes he can’t shoot without hitting Sai, and walks away
  • Heavy 3 moves into the Moonbeam and swings at Maho, hitting twice
  • Heph steps into the fire, taking some damage, and casts Shatter, dealing a tiny bit of damage to some of the enemies
• Delilas and Ana attempt to beat back the fire, Ana succeeds and manages to push it back a bit
  • More stuff comes through the ceiling in the main room, but the ceiling holds for now
  • Maho turns to Sai Horrel, hitting him once and dealing a good chunk of damage to him, and uses second wind again to regain some health
  • Hilariel and Gelian step back to defend the council, Sai missing an opportunity attack
  • Rormir feels like his body is on fire due to the forces running through his blood, and runs out to Karrl in the hallway, pushing through the fire, and is unaffected by the Moonbeam
  • He doesn’t know if Karrl is dead or not, so he picks up Karrl and casts Moonbeam again at a higher level, targeting it slightly further down the hallway to hit more of the enemies
  • Rormir feels Karrl die, and in anger launches his Starry Form shot at Sai, but misses him, and then ends up in shock, managing to keep concentration on Moonbeam but otherwise making no attempt to flee
  • Elias steps forward, dramatically flourishing his cloak, while saying “let this be a step towards healing”, and lands an attack on Sai, shoving shadow Jarles into his face with a booming blade, causing his head to explode
  • The fire spreads again
  • Archer 2 fires a couple of shots at Saraen, taking her down, and steps out of the Moonbeam
  • Archer 4 shoots at Saraen some more, attempting to kill her fully, but misses, and moves out of the Moonbeam
  • Archer 1 moves into position, shoots two more times, but only lands one, causing her to fail a death save
  • Archer 3 moves into the Moonbeam and takes damage, shoots two shots at Saraen, but misses both
  • Sulfurist 1 walks into the main sanctuary, and there is a burst of flame as he starts to set fire to the main room
  • Elias can tell that the spirits of the island are considering this an attack, and seem to be reacting accordingly
  • Heph steps out of the fire, walks over to Saraen and heals her, then tries his best to protect the back of the room with his body
• Delilas and Ana fight the fire, and Delilas pushes it back again
  • Two vines shoot down from the ceiling, narrowly missing the sulfurist, and as these vines break through the ceiling, the ceiling begins to bow inward, like it’s going to collapse soon, and the hallway is starting to crumble a bit too
  • Maho smacks at Archer 2, hitting him once, dealing some damage and pushing him back, then uses second wind again to recover some health but takes some fire damage
  • Hilariel, Gelian and Thad form a wall with Heph to protect the council
  • Rormir doesn’t feel any peace at the death of Sai, and attempting to restore balance he Misty Steps into the main chamber, and while doing so Karrl disappears into the ether
  • Rormir tells Sulfurist 1 to stop right now, and then shoots him, landing one critical hit and one solid hit, he is nearly dead and falls to his knees, and Rormir tells him to stop the fire or face his destiny, forming a very imposing figure as he walks directly up to the Sulfurist, who seems to look back in a way that is familiar but also not, and Rormir sees a fear and reverence in his eyes, and Rormir feels he has been looked at like this in the past
  • Rormir also tries to communicate to the vines that we are trying to preserve this space, and he feels like he establishes some connection, that we are directly under the forest which is lashing out, and the anger the forest feels seems familiar to Rormir, an anger that he felt originally when he first traveled to the material plane, an anger that cause him to knock out Elias on his first meeting, the anger that caused him to not show mercy to Jude, a righteous anger seeking balance
  • Elias walks through the fire and enters the Moonbeam, taking some damage from both, then activates wind wall from the amulet, dealing a bunch of damage to the dudes in the hallway, and killing Archer 2, then misty steps back into the side room
  • With the wind wall in place the enemies need to attack Maho, Heavy 3 misses both strikes and Heavy 2 misses both strikes, the archers try to fire but the wind wall deflects them all
  • Sulfurist 1 takes off his fire resistant cloak, and uses it to start trying to put out the fire with it, managing to push it back quite a bit, and keeps walking towards it to keep trying to extinguish it, seeming to be on a mission
  • Heph fires two lightning bolts at Archer 3, whittling him down but not quite taking him out
• Delilas and Ana try to fight the fire, but neither manage to accomplish it this time
  • A massive boulder crashes into the floor right next to Rormir, a second one falling fairly close, and a third one falls closer to the statue, and the ceiling seems like it is going to collapse very soon
  • Maho hits Heavy 4 taking him down, and then hits Heavy 3, damaging him a bit
  • The council notes it is probably time to escape, and Thad grabs Sai’s mace and starts smacking the wall with it
  • Rormir moves up to the fire, stepping into it and saying “I’m willing to do what is necessary to restore balance”, offering to sacrifice himself, dropping his blood into the fire to try to prevent the room from falling apart, or at least try to give some time for the good people to get out
  • Rormir looks to the enemies in the hallway and tells them to stop the destruction, but they don’t seem too concerned by him, and he recasts Moonbeam again, killing Archer 3 and Heavy 3
  • Rormir realizes that fire destroyed the forest, and is going to destroy this temple, but maybe it’s not a bad thing as sometimes fire needs to burn things down to renew them and allow them to regrow
  • Rormir uses his power to hold the temple in place, hopefully long enough to allow everyone to escape
  • Elias charges through the fire and steps into the Moonbeam, taking some fire damage but not any damage from the Moonbeam, and looking over at Rormir he seems him growing bigger and expanding as chunks of him spread out, and the Moonbeam feels warm and comforting and protective, and he says “Oh shit, Rormir is getting worse guys”
  • Rormir yells at Elias to get out, because he can’t hold it much longer
  • Elias stabs at Archer 1, missing, and yells back in that we need to get everyone out, and then dashes away from the archers and heads down the hall
  • The fire spreads, Delilas and Ana taking some damage from the fire
  • The archers step up to Maho and try to attack her, but miss
  • The sulfurist continues to try to put out the fire, but Rormir whispers something to him, hands him something, and tells him to get out safely, and he is able to pass safely through the Moonbeam, moving with a purpose
  • Heph moves up next to Thad and uses his Mason’s Tools to make a hole that can be made bigger by everyone else
• Delilas misty steps through the hole, as does Ana, and then both pull out knives and chisel away at the hole, making it slightly bigger
  • Boulder start to fall from the ceiling, but the vines grab onto them and hold them back for a bit, buying the group some additional time
  • Maho walks up to the hole in the wall, lands a critical hit on it, and absolutely smashes a giant hole in the wall, drops her giant form, steps through the hole, and walks out to the hallway
  • She sees Rormir standing in the fire, she’s had a complicated relationship with him but yells at him to get out, and he tells her we need to go on without him, and which points she smacks Archer 1, dealing a chunk of damage to him
  • The council start running through the hole, leading the charge to get out, Gelian and Hilariel saying they will take up the rear
  • Rormir stays put trying to hold the room together, but moves the Moonbeam on top of Archer 4, killing him, and then tells Maho she needs to make sure John Wick (Sulfurist 1) gets out with us
  • Rormir again tells Maho to leave him and get out, and as a final action takes a shot at Archer 1, killing him and removing all enemy combatants from the fight, given that John Wick seems to be no longer attempting to fight
  • Elias grabs Delilas and Ana’s arms and drags them out of the room, dashing as far as possible
  • John Wick walks up to Maho, making no aggressive moves, looks at her and says “We need to get out, is there anyone hurt, I can help them”, Maho tells him to get out, and he nods and continues running down the hall
  • Heph dashes out as far as he can make it
• Rocks are falling, and vines are grabbing the rocks catching them as much as possible
  • Heph casts Message, saying to Rormir “It was nice having you on our plane”, Rormir responds “It was nice meeting you, friend”, he winks at Heph like Pheh did, and Heph smirks in response
  • The rocks keep falling, and the tunnel collapses, hiding Rormir from view and the sanctuary disappears from view, now buried in rubble
  • Ser nods to Rormir, knowing what him disappearing means
  • The group reflects on what it means for Rormir to have disappeared
  • The group sees rats emerge, with intelligence in their eyes, and start to burrow into the rubble, looking for something
  • Maho seems convinced Rormir will get out, Heph thinks he’s gone in a fitting way, and Elias is openly weeping at the loss of Rormir and Karrl
  • Heph tries to summon Karrl again, but it doesn’t seem to work, and Heph starts to cry a bit, realizing that Karrl doesn’t seem to be able to come back
  • John approaches Heph, hands him the staff Rormir grew when he became a druid, and tells Heph Rormir said to give this to you
  • It has an inscription that says “New Beginnings” and John says Rormir said you would understand
